The prenatal phase is broken down into three trimesters. As hormones flunctuate during this time, the prevalence of a Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorder (PMAD) is possible. 1/5 women can experience a PMAD during pregnancy and/or the first year after concepcion. Establishing a postpartum support plan during pregnancy can be extremely benefical as you transition into the postpartum phase.
Adjusting to motherhood is a challenging transition. It is common to experience "baby blues" two days to two weeks after delivery. If symptoms persist or intensify, it is important to seek support. PMADs include postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, post traumatic stress disorder and even perinatal psychosis and bipolar disorder.
